“Straight” Jacket
A durational performance using the imagery of a straightjacket to explore ideas of sexual inclination and societal restriction. Chained to the walls in a straightjacket, the performer(s) meditate on a relationship with restraint, with unrequited desire, with one’s own psyche. The straightjacket is constriction, a physical restriction, a limit to functionality. The image is powerful: a jacket which holds back the arms and constrains the body. It has both a magic and a psychotic element to it, like Hannibal Lecter or Harry Houdini. The straightjacket binds you to yourself, while at the same time keeping you from hurting yourself. It is aggressively taming the body to behave.
